Atmel Studio6 – Windows 8 installation

On the weekend, we have done some fun experiment on installing Atmel Studio6 onto Windows 8 release preview. We did a screen capture and you can watch the whole process (shortened to under 4 mins.) here.

Software

  • Windows 8 release preview (32 bit), fully patched with Internet access
  • .NET 4.5 built-in
  • vs_isoshell.exe (Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 RC shell – Isolated)

VMware player and VM with

  • 1 x Intel Core i7 CPU 980 @ 3.33GHz
  • 2GB for RAM
  • 60GB for hard disk space
  • Network (Bridge mode)

Atmel Software

  • AS6installer-6.0.1843.noVSSnoDotNet.exe
  • AS6installer-patch-6.0.1882.exe

1st Attempt

  • A fresh copy of Windows 8 installed and patched
  • .NET 4.5 already built-in
  • Installed vs_isoshell.exe (Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 RC shell – Isolated)
  • Rebooted, checked for updates (non found)
  • Ran as6installer-6.0.1843.noVSSnoDotNet.exe

as6installer-6.0.1843.noVSSnoDotNet.exe did not see Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 RC shell already being installed and attempted to download and install 2010 version. We decided not to continue with this install – FAILED.

2nd Attempt

  • A fresh copy of Windows 8 installed and patched
  • .NET 4.5 already built-in
  • Ran as6installer-6.0.1843.noVSSnoDotNet.exe
  • Setup downloaded and installed MS VS 2010
  • Setup downloaded and installed Atmel USB driver

as6installer-6.0.1843.noVSSnoDotNet.exe successfully completed the download and installation process, we restarted Windows and checked for updates (non found) after installation.

Atmel Studio 6 patching

  • Ran as6installer-patch-6.0.1882.exe
  • Somehow the patch may be looking for .NET 3.5 and tons of popup Windows came up
  • Patch completed successfully

The patching was not too successful neither. Upon starting Atmel Studio 6, we noticed the IDE failed to connect to local debug agent.

This concludes our weekend software testing.

Enjoy
